Brake Pad Reviews: Top 10 Models 1900

Here are the reviews of the most reliable brake pads by top brake pad brands for Harley Davidson. Read the descriptions attentively to pick up the right set for your H-D model. There’s no doubt that default Harley Davidson brakes are excellent, but the time for a change or customization might have already come. I provide a detailed test-based review for each model.

1. EBC Brakes EBPCK1027 Double-H Sintered – Great Replacement for Harley OEM Brake Pads

EBC Brakes is one of the leading brake part manufacturers on the US and worldwide market. The current product line of the brand includes over 5,000 brake parts for all vehicle types. I knew this manufacturer even before I bought my first motorbike!

These sintered brake pads are quite similar to standard Harley pads and offer excellent durability. The sintered compound provides very high friction so that you can make sharp stops. No matter what the weather is, these Double-H pads don’t lose performance even if you cover them in wet mud.

The downside of this material is that high friction metal components damage the rotors over time, making them less effective. If you’re not an aggressive rider, this damage won’t be very notable over the years. Still, it’s an important consideration. EBPCK1027 by EBC is compatible with FLHXS Street Glide Special 2015 and FLHX Street Glide 2008-2015.

EBC Brakes EBPCK1027 Complete Double-H Sintered Brake Pad...

  • Double-H Sintered Brake Pads deliver high performance and are well known as the EBC flagship sintered high-performance brake pad
  • ECE R 90 brake safety approved and TUV tested, these ultra high friction HH rated brake pads remain a market leader above the rest as nothing else beats the performance of the Double-H Sintered Brake Pad
  • Manufactured in the US in the state-of-the-art sintering plant in Ohio, Double-H Sintered Brake Pads perform well in all weather conditions be it dry or wet and have a high longevity lasting for many miles
  • Worthy replacement pads for Street Glide;
  • Highest friction guaranteed;
  • Manufactured in Ohio;
  • Superior longevity.
  • Not universal;
  • Metal components wear off the rotors faster.

2. Zinger Sintered Brake Pads for Harley Davidson – Best Brake Pads for Harley Touring

Zinger offers the best brake pads for Harley Sportster (Custom, Hugger, Flat Track). At least, I couldn’t find a better solution for this bike model. Some of my friends and customers also use this model on their Softails and Heritages. Due to the V-pad design with 2 mounting holes, you can also install it on several generations of Super Glide, Low Rider, Dyna Wide Glide, Street Bob, Electra Glide, Road Glide, Low Glide, Fat Boy, and more touring bikes. They’re almost universal!

As you already know, sintered pads provide extra friction that can stop even the heaviest vehicles independently from the conditions. But these pads are severe-sintered, which means even higher friction. Braking with these pads feels quite rough, and I don’t like it, but I know riders who really appreciate such characteristics! Another benefit of purchasing pads by Zinger is that you get 3 sets of fronts and rears with a discount.

3. Volar Front & Rear Brake Pads – Best Semi-Metal Pads for Road King

Volar Front Rear Brake Pads

This is one more set of brake pads by Volar on my listing. Unlike the previous model, these are not sintered parts. They are made of a Kevlar-ceramic compound that provides precise control and predictable brake response.

Besides, these features are provided without any notable noise and rotor damage. Unfortunately, the product’s fitment is very narrow, and you can install the part only on 2000-2007 Harley FLHRi/Road King FLHR.

  • Volar Motorsport Brake Pads

  • No noise even on polished rotors;
  • Highly responsive controls;

  • No damage to rotors.
  • Narrow fitment.

4. Carbon Fiber Brake Pads ECCPP – Best Carbon Harley Davidson Brake Parts

ECCPP is a US-based retailer of aftermarket parts with proprietary testing facilities for constant quality control over outsourcing production lines. For a modest price, you get a set of high-quality FA409 carbon brake pads. The standard-shaped purple plate provides excellent wear and heat resistance along with notable noise reduction. The coating of the place also has thermal insulation capabilities.

I noticed that carbon fiber pads produce less brake dust and generally last a bit longer than semi-metallic and organic models. On the other hand, they are more expensive. There’s no metal in the composition, however, so your rotors will remain safer over time. It seems to be a good investment if you need high-performance pads for speedy daily rides.

FA409 pads by ECCPP are compatible with quite a lot of Harley models, including Road Glide, V-Rod, Night Rod Special, Road King, Street Glide, and Street Rod. I tested them on Harley Road Glide, which is almost 800lbs, and I was totally satisfied with the average stopping speed.

  • They’re rather expensive;

5. ECCPP FA409 Sintered Brake Pads – Second Best Brake Pads for Harley Davidson Touring

Here is one more set of pads by ECCPP. Unlike the soft carbon FA409, these are made of a severe sintered compound with a ceramic base. Although most sintered pads are quite noisy, these don’t make any annoying sounds at all. At least for the first 15,000 miles.

The standard 1-H design is compatible with many V-Rod versions, Tri Glide, Road Glide, Street Rod, Road King, Electra Glide, Night Rod, Street Glide, and more (see the compatibility chart via the product link). If your H-D is compatible with FA409 brake pads and the rotors can withstand the sintered compound’s harsh friction, you can install them and enjoy high braking performance.

I recommend this product in case you want to replace the original pads with similar durable and rough parts. They are effective for any conditions, don’t require long warm-ups, and survive high touring mileage. There are 3 sets of pads in the package so that you can replace them on the go if needed.

6. Sixity Front Rear Ceramic Brake Pads – Best Sportster Brake Pads

Sixity is a young brand specialized in extra-durable parts for power sport vehicles. The brake pads for XL883C Sportster by Sixity are made of a highly durable ceramic fiber compound that includes metallic parts (no iron) but doesn’t wear off the rotors as fast as severe sintered pads. Don’t worry about the colored coating on the rotors as these pads don’t erase it. This compound also has excellent thermal recovery speed, which means very short brake fade at high temperatures. Another benefit of such composition is low dusting.

I can recommend these pads to those Sportster owners who need sharp breaking with minimal rotor damage. This compound is a golden medium for such cases. The 2-H design is quite simple for installation and guarantees longevity, but I’d like to see an extra pair of pads for emergency replacement anyway.

Sixity Front Rear Ceramic Brake Pads 2000-2003 for Harley...
  • ELIMINATE BRAKE GRIND AND PAD SQUEAL: equipped with an extremely quiet, vibration-damping braking composite, these ceramic brake pads reduce brake noise
  • GAIN HASSLE-FREE STOPPING POWER: while sintered brakes may require more frequent rotor replacement, ceramic brake pads deliver both smooth braking and minimal rotor wear. Plus, ceramic brake pads enable cold-morning starts with no warm-up required (unlike carbon/graphite or hard-sintered full-race pads)
  • CHOOSE LONG PAD LIFE: the durable high-strength ceramic-fiber structures extend pad life and help the ceramic brake pads last longer than organic or organic/Kevlar pads
  • PAIR WITH CHROME-PLATED WHEELS: the low-dusting formula is non-ferrous (containing no iron compounds) which helps to minimize discoloration of matte or polished wheels
  • MINIMIZE BRAKE FADE: the non-ferrous metal filaments offer the ideal thermal conductivity to quickly conduct heat away from the pad-rotor interface for faster thermal recovery and reduced brake fade and rotor wear
  • Exceeds OEM specifications;
  • Same efficiency in dry and wet conditions;
  • Quiet operation;
  • Reduced vibration;
  • Short brake fade.
  • No emergency pair of pads;
  • Feets not every Sportster.

7. Foreverun Motor Sintered Brake Pads – Excellent Harley Brake Pads Touring Option

Foreverun Motor FrontFreverun by Bizslink LLC is a young but trusted retailer of high-quality parts by aftermarket manufacturers. Brake pads by the company are attractive due to their relatively low price and excellent characteristics. OEM sintered metal parts offer fast braking without warming up so that you can feel excellent performance in both cold and hot weather. Moisture and mud don’t spoil the experience either.

On the other hand, they tend to squeak from time to time and erase the rotor over time as the compound’s base material is copper. I don’t recommend them for aggressive riding styles, but you can fully rely on them if you’re a casual rider. This model is compatible with Touring FLTR/FLTR-i Road Glide Harleys manufactured from 2000 to 2007, with 2000-2003 XL Sportster, Dyna Series, Touring Series, and 2002-2004 V-Rod. 8. Sintered HH Front & Rear Brake Pads – Best Sintered Pads for Softail

Sintered HH FrontLooking for a Softail Heritage Harley Davidson rear brake pad replacement? Volar Motorsport offers an excellent solution for 2000-2007 Softails. These 2-H pads are made of a high-quality sintered compound that provides a strong brake response independently from conditions.

It’s very similar to the pre-installed OEM pads for the new H-D generation but won’t cost you a fortune. I don’t know what they put into this compound as they keep the info in secret, but it really doesn’t lead to squeaking and notable rotor damage. Probably, they use a ceramic base to achieve such softness.

  • The softest sintered compound;
  • Noiseless performance;
  • 2-H design;
  • No rotor galling;
  • Designed for touring.
  • Narrow fitment.

9. TUPARTS Front and Rear Brake Pads FA409 – Best Kevlar Touring Brake Pads

Kevlar-carbon compound by TUPARTS was a finding for me as it’s a rotor-safe material that doesn’t harm the rotors at all. The mileage of these parts may appear shorter than sintered pads offer, but the performance in both dry and wet conditions is excellent.

The feeling is not too soft and not as hard as sintered pads offer. These 1-H Kevlar-carbon pads are compatible with quite many H-D models, including Electra Glide, Road King, Tri Glide, V-Rod, Street Glide, Street Rod, and Ultra Limited. For a fuller compatibility chart, visit the product page as I don’t want to overload the article.

10. SCITOO Carbon Brake Pads for Harley-Davidson Sportster – Reliable Sportster Replacement Pads

SCITOO is a California-based brand with production lines scattered all over the world. They offer high-quality carbon fiber pads compatible with FA381, FA387 OEM part numbers. The stopping power of the material is comparable to sintered parts, but there’s no damage to the rotors as well as no annoying noise.

Carbon fiber is also a cheaper option. The downsides include a shorter lifespan compared to sintered pads and the absence of an emergency set in the package.

My readers and customers ask me quite a lot of questions about brake pads, and here are the concise answers to the most frequently asked of them. Don’t skip this section if you want to understand the topic deeper.

How long do motorcycle brake pads last?

Actually, the lifespan of brake pads depends on the riding style of every H-D owner. The way you use front and rear brakes define the permitted mileage. I recommend you inspect your Harley-Davidson brake parts every 100 miles just in case something goes wrong before the original expiry date. On average, high-quality brake pads can remain effective from 10,000 to 25,000 miles, but you shouldn’t wait for them to wear off notably. You need them to be in the best condition possible all the time to maintain maximum safety.

How to change front brake pads on a Harley Road King?

First of all, get all the needed tools, including a 10mm wrench, ¼-inch 12-point box-end wrench, flat screwdriver, specialized lubricant for brake pads, and, of course, new pads. Now, do the following steps:

  • loosen (don’t remove) brake pad holding pins with the box end wrench. Rotate counterclockwise;
  • remove the caliper with a 10mm wrench. Slide it down the rotor to clear the fender;
  • pry the brake pads apart with a flat-blade screwdriver. This way, the piston with the return into the initial position;
  • remove the brake pads;
  • lubricate the backsides of the new pads to prevent squeaking;
  • slide the pads into the caliper;
  • put holding pins into the caliper (don’t tighten);
  • slide the caliper back on the rotor;
  • tighten the bolts with the 10mm wrench, then tighten the pins with a ¼” wrench.

Harley brake pads sintered or organic?

Sintered brake pads are made through the sintering of metal particles. As a result, the compound can resist heavy friction. Sintered pads work well independently from weather conditions and cover most of the situations that you may encounter riding your H-D. There are disadvantages too. Such pads are more expensive than organic; they sound much louder and may lead to faster rotor wear off. Your bike’s rotors should be ready for sintered pads if you don’t want to damage them.

Organic pads are made of fibers, fillers, and resin. Some extra-durable models also include Kevlar or carbon. They’re easy, inexpensive, and behave perfectly well if you’re a casual rider. Unlike sintered pads, they’re rarely used as a default option. They provide a softer feeling and make less noise, but wear off significantly faster. At the same time, the rotors don’t wear off as fast as with sintered pads. I also don’t recommend them for riding in wet and muddy conditions.

How to tell if it’s time to replace brake pads?

Here are the signs that you should replace the brake pads:

  • The groove indicator is almost gone or absent. If none, go to a technician who has a micrometer;
  • Braking starts to feel different. This is a true sign that you have to see the technician;
  • Squeaking or squealing noise. You won’t go wrong with this sign. Immediate maintenance is required.

Who makes Harley-Davidson brake pads?

I couldn’t find any info on the company that manufactures the OEM pads for Harleys. The company sells them under the Original Equipment name without disclosing the actual manufacturer name. I only found out that Harley sells the material’s surpluses to other brands, but doesn’t disclose their names either.

Keep Safe!
