The downside of this material is that high friction metal components damage the rotors over time, making them less effective. If you’re not an aggressive rider, this damage won’t be very notable over the years. Still, it’s an important consideration. These 1-H Kevlar-carbon pads are compatible with quite many H-D models, including Electra Glide, Road King, Tri Glide, V-Rod, Street Glide, Street Rod, and Ultra Limited. How long do motorcycle brake pads last?

Actually, the lifespan of brake pads depends on the riding style of every H-D owner. The way you use front and rear brakes define the permitted mileage. I recommend you inspect your Harley-Davidson brake parts every 100 miles just in case something goes wrong before the original expiry date. On average, high-quality brake pads can remain effective from 10,000 to 25,000 miles, but you shouldn’t wait for them to wear off notably. You need them to be in the best condition possible all the time to maintain maximum safety.

How to change front brake pads on a Harley Road King?

First of all, get all the needed tools, including a 10mm wrench, ¼-inch 12-point box-end wrench, flat screwdriver, specialized lubricant for brake pads, and, of course, new pads. Now, do the following steps:

  • loosen (don’t remove) brake pad holding pins with the box end wrench. Rotate counterclockwise;
  • remove the caliper with a 10mm wrench. Slide it down the rotor to clear the fender;
  • pry the brake pads apart with a flat-blade screwdriver. This way, the piston with the return into the initial position;
  • remove the brake pads;
  • lubricate the backsides of the new pads to prevent squeaking;
  • slide the pads into the caliper;
  • put holding pins into the caliper (don’t tighten);
  • slide the caliper back on the rotor;
  • tighten the bolts with the 10mm wrench, then tighten the pins with a ¼” wrench.

Harley brake pads sintered or organic?

Sintered brake pads are made through the sintering of metal particles. As a result, the compound can resist heavy friction. Sintered pads work well independently from weather conditions and cover most of the situations that you may encounter riding your H-D. There are disadvantages too. Such pads are more expensive than organic; they sound much louder and may lead to faster rotor wear off. Your bike’s rotors should be ready for sintered pads if you don’t want to damage them.

Organic pads are made of fibers, fillers, and resin. Some extra-durable models also include Kevlar or carbon. They’re easy, inexpensive, and behave perfectly well if you’re a casual rider. Unlike sintered pads, they’re rarely used as a default option. They provide a softer feeling and make less noise, but wear off significantly faster. At the same time, the rotors don’t wear off as fast as with sintered pads. I also don’t recommend them for riding in wet and muddy conditions.

How to tell if it’s time to replace brake pads?

Here are the signs that you should replace the brake pads:

  • The groove indicator is almost gone or absent. If none, go to a technician who has a micrometer;
  • Braking starts to feel different. This is a true sign that you have to see the technician;
  • Squeaking or squealing noise. You won’t go wrong with this sign. Immediate maintenance is required.

Who makes Harley-Davidson brake pads?

I couldn’t find any info on the company that manufactures the OEM pads for Harleys. The company sells them under the Original Equipment name without disclosing the actual manufacturer name. I only found out that Harley sells the material’s surpluses to other brands, but doesn’t disclose their names either.
